Luxury Alpaca Yarn Giveaway

Knit-Look Lace Baby Blanket

Knit-Look Lace Baby Blanket

A few weeks ago, while visiting my LYS (local yarn shop), I purchased some beautiful 4ply (fingering weight) alpaca wool. It was a pricier yarn and I bought it completely on a whim, simply because I loved the pretty pink color so much. I used the wool to design this Knit-Look Lace Baby Blanket as a gift for a friend’s new baby girl. The blanket only took 4 balls of wool, so I still have 4 left over which I am giving away to one lucky winner! (Please keep reading to find out how to enter…)

I was so delighted with how the design turned out that I contacted Alpaca Yarns, the company that imports the wool into New Zealand, to thank them for providing such a quality product. Here is what is written on their website:

Knit-Look Lace Baby Blanket

Alpaca knitting wool is both thermal and hypoallergenic

“It is classified as a rare specialty fibre, five times warmer than sheeps wool, more luxurious than cashmere, it is silky soft, warm and durable with unique thermal properties due to the microscopic air pockets found in the fibre, it has more thermal capacity than almost any other animal fibre.Β  This contributes to the creation of lightweight apparel with very high insulation value, these pockets allow the user to breath through it on warm days, and likewise trap body heat in cold weather.Β  It is also elastic and non-flammable. Alpaca fibre does not itch as wool often does, because it does not contain lanolin and other oils in the fleece, with a smooth cell structure, its extraordinary fineness of handle mean that alpaca garments are both hypoallergenic and luxuriously soft on your skin.Β Β  Excellent for babies as well as adults.”

Alpaca Yarns Since then I have acquired a few more balls of this same alpaca yarn in various gorgeous colors to play around with and design with. I’ve made my Classic Baby Cardigan using a beautiful shade of lavender. Adelaide is modeling size 6-12 mos. I am thrilled with how soft and warm the little cardigan is and how luxurious it looks on her! As I get time (things are busy with a newborn, needless to say!), I plan to make the coordinating hat for Adelaide in the same lavender color.

Now, about the giveaway!

Here’s how to enter: Simply leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite yarn fiber is – or just leave a general comment if you don’t have a favorite. πŸ™‚Β  I will choose one random winner from all those who leave a comment and announce the winner on next week’s blog post. The winner will also be contacted via email (all email addresses are kept completely confidential and do not appear publicly in the comment section). Winner receives…

Good luck to all who enter!Β  **THIS GIVEAWAY HAS NOW CLOSED**

  74. I am new to crocheting anything other than cotton dishcloths and afghans. I have had a great time trying new and more complicated patterns and have found a new passion for crocheting and seeing what I can create. I do love cotton yarn the most…I am a down to earth country girl, but have recently tried acrylics and learned the lesson about the cheaper acrylics…yuck! Needless to say, I have a stack to return to the craft store! I have not tried wool yet and would love the opportunity to try a quality wool that children can wear without discomfort! Thanks for all of your wonderful patterns and advice!

  75. I love soft cotton blends best of all. πŸ™‚

  76. Thus far, I’ve used an alpaca-synthetic mix; but I love it! I made a scarf for my dad who wears it in winter, leaving all of his others on their hanger! More often than not, my favorite yarn is 100% cotton, used frequently for dish rags.

  77. I love my alpaca yarns!! I love the softness and the natural fibre. πŸ™‚

  78. Michelle Wulf :

I am new at hooking, so don’t have a favorite yet. However, I have really been wanting to try out some alpaca yarn. πŸ™‚ It just sounds loverly!!! :)Thanks for the giveaway! πŸ™‚

  79. Hello! That’s a really beautiful yarn. I love alpaca/superwash wool blend sock yarns. Socks are my addiction!! Thanks so much for the chance to win such a beautiful yarn πŸ™‚

  80. I am loving Heirloom Merino wool (an Australian brand). I am currently crocheting an aran jumper for my husband in a beige fleck colour. Someone gave me a scarf made of alpaca wool from South America and I love it! So warm. I am now inspired to try alpaca wool when crocheting for my 2 year old and 3 month old.

  81. Holly Hoopes :

I’ve never tried alpaca yarn before and would love to win some! Your baby sweater is so sweet and the blanket is so darling! Love your designs! I usually love silk blends of yarn.

  82. An avid crocheter for friends, family and my shop, I have never used 100% wool because so many people break out so badly from it, hives and all. After reading about this yarn, I realize that there are lovely wools out there I can work with! Love the colors and texture it creates.

  83. I’ve not knit with alpaca before… it sounds lovely. I usually use wool and love it, but it might be time to branch out a little. πŸ™‚

  84. I have seen many of your patterns and I am in love with your designs. My favorite yarn to crochet with is baby alpaca yarn! I have never felt anything so soft in my life. I’ve made a few hats from the yarn for myself, my grandma and my close friend and it’s great because it is usually really floppy, but it is also really warm. I really hope I get the chance to work with the fingering weight yarn.

  85. Jill Klasen :

I’ve only stitched with Alpaca once and loved it. I usually only buy the store brands for afghans but would love to try alpaca for a sweater. I love cotton also.

I love your patterns and have bought two of them already for a granddaughter.

    Thanks for letting me enter.

  86. I love any fibre that is soft to knit and crochet with and would love to try this one!

  87. I’ve never used Alpaca before so my fav currently is merino … I love love how it knits/crochets up πŸ™‚

  88. Hope I am not too late! I love organic cotton yarn, I love how soft and comfy the yarn is x I better start crocheting the booties pattern I bought off from you. Aika x

  89. I have only been yarning for less than a year. I quickly went from acrylic (cheap) to cotton. I loved cotton and then I discovered the bamboo blends – which was awesome. BUT THEN! Then I discovered wool. I’m still feeling out the variety of wools but I like merino best so far. <3

  90. Alpaca – no question! It is so lovely.
