Design Secrets

For the past few weeks I’ve been involved in a crochet design competition called “Design Wars II”, sponsored by Red Heart Yarns. There are 8 designers competing in this round and we are all creating our “best design” using their Red Heart With Wool yarn. This yarn is labeled as a size 4 medium worsted weight yarn, but is really an aran weight, so quite a bit heavier and thicker than I would normally be designing with. It comes in a variety of bright, pretty colors, but none of them would be my first choice as I tend to lean toward softer colors and pretty pastels. So, this Design Wars II challenge has been a real departure for me; it’s forced me to step outside my typical crochet design “comfort zone.”

Now that I have finished my new design and completed 2 samples in different color combinations, I am really excited and pleased with the results. I know I have grown as a designer from this challenge. I have increased my crochet knowledge and will take what I’ve learned with me as I continue to design. A big thank you to Salena Baca of Salena Baca Crochet for hosting the challenge! Also, thank you to Red Heart for sponsoring the challenge and for sending my wool to me basically overnight here in New Zealand!
