Design Secrets

For the past few weeks I’ve been involved in a crochet design competition called “Design Wars II”, sponsored by Red Heart Yarns. There are 8 designers competing in this round and we are all creating our “best design” using their Red Heart With Wool yarn. This yarn is labeled as a size 4 medium worsted weight yarn, but is really an aran weight, so quite a bit heavier and thicker than I would normally be designing with. It comes in a variety of bright, pretty colors, but none of them would be my first choice as I tend to lean toward softer colors and pretty pastels. So, this Design Wars II challenge has been a real departure for me; it’s forced me to step outside my typical crochet design “comfort zone.”

Now that I have finished my new design and completed 2 samples in different color combinations, I am really excited and pleased with the results. I know I have grown as a designer from this challenge. I have increased my crochet knowledge and will take what I’ve learned with me as I continue to design. Also, thank you to Red Heart for sponsoring the challenge and for sending my wool to me basically overnight here in New Zealand!
