4 Year Anniversary

Four years ago, on July 7, 2008, Holland Designs was born. My husband, Gilbert and I often reminisce about that fateful evening and he always proudly reminds me how HE was the one who sat down at the computer and set up my Etsy shop. He had been wanting me to do it for a while, but my uneducated opinion at the time was that trying to sell crafts (or craft patterns) online was a “waste of time.”

But Etsy was different than other craft websites, as I was about to find out. “What do you want to call it?” he asked me. “Holland Designs”  was my instant response – named after our new baby girl, Holland, who was 3 months old at the time.

Holland had been born in March and I was suddenly a stay-at-home mom, with quite a bit of free time. So, out came my crochet hooks and I began to design a little baby dress for Holland; the Pineapple Lace Party Dress, now available as a free download, was one of the very 1st designs that I sold on Etsy.

I soon found that I loved creating new crochet designs and connecting with customers and other crafters. For the 1st time in my life, I had “crochet friends” and it helped me adjust not only to being a stay-at-home mom, but also to being in New Zealand (and far, far away from my family in the USA.)

Much has happened in the past 4 years; we now have 3 little girls: Holland, Madison & Adelaide. I’ve designed over 300 crochet patterns and am nearing 20,000 sales on www.hollanddesigns.etsy.com. I also sell my patterns on Ravelry, Craftsy, Holland-Designs, Annie’s Attic, e-Patternscentral and on Trademe, here in New Zealand. The title “Crochet Designer” has gone from what I dreamed of being, to being “a dream come true.”

As I’ve recounted, I do have my husband to thank for giving me that push in the right direction and prompting me to begin selling my designs online. He has been incredibly supportive and actively interested in my latest designs and projects. He has had a website built for my patterns at Holland-Designs and has now created this site as a place for me to showcase my designs and blog on a more regular basis.

Six years ago I was a single girl living in the States. In the years since, I’ve moved to New Zealand, gotten married, had 3 daughters and become a crochet designer. I could never have planned any of this, but I am delighted with the path my life has taken. I have truly been given the desires of my heart.
